Youth Head Coach/Routesetter

About HiClimb & our Mission:

HiClimb opened in Honolulu, Hawaii on July 1, 2021. Our 14,000 square foot facility offers over 8,000 square feet of climbing terrain that includes bouldering, top-rope, auto belays and lead climbing. We also offer our members and guests a weightlifting area, yoga and fitness classes, a café and co-working spaces.

We are a community focused organization.

Our mission: Improve people's lives through indoor rock climbing.

Roles & Responsibilities:

The head coach not only helps develop the curriculum and training plans, but they are an educator and mentor. They make sure the youth follow the programmed curriculum and help to develop and support the other coaches at HiClimb. This position supports both our recreational and competitive youth teams.

Ensure professional conduct for any employee on and off HiClimb premises - acting as a positive role model for the whole coaching team, the athletes on the team, gym members, and guests at all times.

Mentor and continually develop members of the coaching team, taking into account their unique qualities and creating ways to employ and integrate those skills and experiences into the curriculum.

Help empower all coaches by identifying strengths and weaknesses and offer constructive criticism and encourage professional development

HEAD COACH:

Daily: 

  • Manage and optimize schedules for coaches and team athletes

  • Maintain a roster 

  • Coach the teams by imparting the maximum appropriate level of knowledge and skills in a healthy and productive learning environment

  • Represent HiClimb and the sport of climbing in all interactions with guests or the public

  • Lead or participate in the pre-brief and debriefs of coaches and provides feedback to them.

  • Execute the program curriculum

  • Evaluate and documents the progress, performance, and participation of athletes.

  • Maintain positive energy and ensures climbing team athletes are engaged and motivated

  • Explain and demonstrate climbing techniques based on the curriculum.

 

Weekly: 

  • 1:1 discussion with direct report to Management 

  • 20 hours of head coaching/ admin.

 

Biweekly:

  • Verify accurate tracking of hours worked and task assignments

 

  • As Needed/when possible: 

  • Update Support when youth need to be added or taken off the team.

  • Responsible for ensuring a substitute coach is present if unable to work a practice.

  • Correspond with athlete’s parents regarding any goals, progress, concerns, or changes to their participation on the team.

  • Continually growing and improving the program.

 

ROUTE SETTER: 

 

Daily: 

  • Follow setting schedules for settings including stripping, cleaning, setting and forerunning and upkeep of previous sets to meet a balance of quality, efficiency, density and job satisfaction. 

  • Setter average

    • >3 boulder problems for a regular set

    • >1.5 rope routes a set 

  • Maintain a diversity and depth of ability on the RIC scale

  • Continues to improve their RIC scale delivery and their awareness of their own body and climbing.

  • Follow the HiClimb risk management philosophies, practices, and SOP’s

  • Perform risk management inspections of routes to identify fall hazards, rope drag concerns, etc.

  • Participate in morning briefing and de-briefs

  • Maintain setting gear and equipment

  • Clean and organize setting closet.

  • Maintain 1-business day response time with email and in-person follow-up as necessary

  • Assist the Route Setting Manager in track inventory of holds, setting tools, and PPE.

  • Report on morale and physical demands. Request adjustments as needed to maintain a thriving wellness level.

  • Aid in implementing and enforcing facility rules

Weekly: 

  • 16 Hours of Routesetting

  • Execution and document weekly Risk Management Inspections in the logs

  • Rest day/body maintenance day

 

As Needed/when possible: 

  • Support Route Setter Manager with competitions and special events 

  • Retrieve auto belays, hang ropes, etc. as the needs arise

  • Assist RSM in deciding purchase of holds, setting gear, tools, and personal protective equipment

  • Help coordinate external development opportunities

  • Help ensure that operations are following standards as outlined

  • In co-creation with the RSM ensure HiClimb is aligned with the greater risk management standards of the broader industry

  • Leverage personal industry networks to support recruiting

  • Keep abreast of industry developments & the latest events and offerings

  • Be a “market expert” -- be familiar with other gyms:

    • Their route setting styles [density, approach, hold selection, volumes, features, etc.]

    • Their route setting teams and how they engage with community members [ex: events, competitions, workshops]

    • Their risk management practices 

    • Their Route Setting Team amenities [RS wellness programs, insurance coverage, partnerships for RS teams]

 

Annually:

  • Assist in annual physical inventory reconciliation.

Job Requirements:

You have / are:

  • Top rope and lead belay certified.

  • Passionate about climbing.

  • Ability to breakdown, teach, and critique climbing technique to climbers of all abilities

  • Extensive experience in risk management for rock climbing

  • Strong communication skills: interpersonal, public relations, conflict resolution, motivational skills

  • Passionate about working with youth

  • 2 or more years of climbing experience with a strong understanding of climbing movement and skills.

  • Classroom/group management skills including experience instructing youth of different abilities and ages

  • Self-motivated and organized, good communicator. Flexible schedule, willing to travel for weekend competitions and training if needed.

  • 1 or more year’s competitive coaching experience preferred.

  • USA Climbing Certified Coach (Level 1 required; level 2 preferred).

  • Must pass a background check

Compensation:

  • Starting compensation: $21.00 an hour

  • Stipend for competition travel and professional development (coaching cert. CWI. Etc.)

  • Complimentary membership for a significant other or family members

  • Paid time off (PTO):

    • 5 days of PTO starting after onboarding

    • 10 days of PTO each year after completing 1 year of full-time work. They will have 5 days in their first year. These do rollover but each employee can only have a maximum of 10 days accrued at any time.

    • One month paid sabbatical every 3 years of full-time service.
