Route Setter apprentice

About HiClimb & our Mission:

HiClimb opened in Honolulu, Hawaii on July 1, 2021. Our 14,000 square foot facility offers over 8,000 square feet of climbing terrain that includes bouldering, top-rope, auto belays and lead climbing. We also offer our members and guests a weightlifting area, yoga and fitness classes, a café and co-working spaces.

Roles & Responsibilities:

This position is meant to be the starting point for a potential role as a professional commercial route setter. Apprentices help change over the climbs on a daily basis, wash and sort holds/volumes, and fore6run with the crew after the setting is complete. There will also be opportunities to set with the crew.

This position is not a guarantee of future employment at HiClimb. It is an excellent opportunity to learn technical skills necessary for the job, the fundamentals of creating movement, and the challenges of setting fun, appropriate, and thoughtful climbs for our diverse member base. 

Daily: 

Follow setting schedules for settings including stripping, cleaning, setting and forerunning and upkeep of previous sets to meet a balance of quality, efficiency, density and job satisfaction as directed by the Route Setting Manager (RSM). 

  • Cultivate a diversity and depth of ability on the RIC scale

  • Improve awareness of their own body and climbing.

  • Follow the HiClimb risk management philosophies, practices, and SOP’s

  • Participate in morning briefing and de-briefs

  • Maintain setting gear and equipment

  • Clean and organize setting closet

  • Maintain 1-business day response time with email and in-person follow-up as necessary

  • Assist the RSM in track inventory of holds, setting tools, and PPE

  • Aid in implementing and enforcing facility rules

  • Hours:

    • 6:30am - Set up boundaries and equipment in designated areas
    • 7am-8am - Begin stripping routes or boulders

    • 8am-9:30am - Begin washing and sorting holds

      • After Washing - Report to the route setting manager about setting assignments for that day:

        • Clean and organize hold storage area

        • Clean and organize setting carts

        • Sort bolts and screws on setting carts

        • Help clean and maintain the setting area by removing any unnecessary holds or equipment: Coiling ropes, removing ladders and buckets as needed

        • Spot clean setting area

        • Spot clean/brush climbing wall

        • Repair or install T-Nuts

        • Tag and label routes or boulders

    • 1pm-3pm - Begin forerunning 

    • 3pm-3:30pm - Put away clean dried holds and volumes

    • 3:30-4:00pm - Help finalize any routes or boulders, put away any unnecessary setting equipment. Vacuum and spot clean carpet or mats

As Needed/when possible: 

  • Support RSM with competitions and special events 

  • Retrieve auto belays, hang ropes, etc. as the needs arise​

Requirements:

  • Able to lift up to 50lbs

  • Able to forerun (do moves) on boulders up to v5 and sport climbs up to 5.11

  • Work a minimum of 3 days per week

  • Commit to a minimum of 200 hours over several months

Compensation:

  • Starting compensation: $17.00 per hour

  • Daily buddy passes
